Francis Bacon:
(1909-1992), was
one of the best-known British artists in the mid 1900's.
Tragic figure
Bacon's paintings show man as a tragic figure. His twisted, tormented
figures portray man as a physical and mental cripple. Several of his
paintings show a blurred face screaming out in hysteria.
Bacon and Velazquez
Others show men in a state of fear and futility or about too be excuted.
Bacon often uses thin, pale coloring which heightens the tragic theme.

Education
Bacon was born in Dublin, Ireland. He had almost no formal education.
His art was pratically unknown until 1945. He destroyed most of his
early works because he thought they were not good.
